The name Hooghly is said to derive from "hogla" which is a tall reed growing alongside riverbanks. It was originally part of a territory held by a tribe called the Suhmas. It eventually became a part of the Gupta empire. It was conquered over the years by various kings until the Mughal invasion in 1298 A.D. Many years later Portuguese, Dutch, and French explorers came to the area. It eventually became part of the English colony. It became its own district in 1822.
