Bardhamman was first referenced around the 6th century A.D. It went through several transitions of power throughout the centuries. It was invaded by the Muslims. It went through several periods of kings. Then, it came under British rule. It gained its independence with India in 1947. It was the birthplace of the Indian coal industry. On April 7, 2017, Bardhamman district was split into two districts, Paschim Bardhammand and Purba Bardhamman.

The Bauri live deep within the jungles of India. They were traditionally hunters. Today, many are farmers. They use the Bengali and Devanagari scripts. The Bauri are traditionally animists and have adapted a mix of animism and Hinduism. They are 0.11% Christian.
