JALPAIGURI FACTS
The name Jalpaiguri came from the word “Jalpai “ meaning “Olive” which grew in the town and adjacent areas and were even visible in the 1900. The suffix “guri “ means a place. It is situated in the northern part of the state of West Bengal and shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh in the northeast and south respectively . ‘Tea’, ‘Timber ’ and ‘Tourism ’ form the backbone of the trade industry in this district.

The Rajbanshi are a cultivating and landowning community. They are divided into two subgroups. Land is their main source of income with a few being dependent on fishing or working in government services. They are Hindu who worship Narayan and Lakshimi (home deities). They have rich folk songs and tales within their people with the primary language spoken being Bangla.
