Bardhamman was first referenced around the 6th century A.D. It went through several transitions of power throughout the centuries. It was invaded by Muslims. It went through several periods of kings. Then, it came under British rule. It gained its independence with India in 1947. It was the birthplace of the Indian coal industry. On April 7, 2017, Bardhamman district was split into two districts, Paschim Bardhamman and Purba Bardhamman.
