MALDA FACTS
Malda is a district covering an area of 3733 sq Km with Bihar and Uttar Dinajpur at the North, Murshidabad at the South, Bangladesh at the east, and Jharkhand and Bihar at the West. It shares a 165.5 km international border with Bangladesh. Having a central location it is an important junction and entry point to Siliguri from South Bengal.
Mango, jute, and silk are the most notable products of this district. The special variety of mango, Fazli, produced in this region is popularly known by the name of the district and is exported across the world, and is internationally acclaimed. The folk culture of Gambhir is a feature of the district, being a unique way of representing of joy and sorrow of the daily life of the common people, as well as the unique medium of presentation on national and international matters.

1. Shaikh (335,000)
TOTAL POPULATION: 27,780,000
The Shaikh are descendants of Arabs or Hindu converts to Islam. There are Sunni and Shia Shaikhs, but most follow the Sunni way. The Shaikhs hold a variety of jobs. This people group is only found in India with the largest population being in West Bengal.
2. Bagdi (162,000)
TOTAL POPULATION: 3,780,000
The Bagdi people are important in the Hindu/Bengali warrior caste. The word Bagdi comes from the word bharga, which indicates warrior status. Returning for their military service, they were given land to cultivate. However, during the colonial period, almost all their land was lost. They are mainly found in India and Bangladesh, though a large majority live in West Bengal.

TOTAL POPULATION: 1,335,000
The Bairagi are the highest caste in the Hindu system. Many Bairagi men serve as priests and teachers of Hinduism to the lower castes. The peoples main deity is lord Vishnu. Occupations include cultivation, business, service, singing, begging, etc. The traditional occupations of the community are singing religious songs and begging. They have a rich tradition in song and music.
