NORTH 24 PARGANAS FACTS
The lands of North 24 and South 24 Parganas were part of the Gangaridi kingdom. The Portuguese came in the 16th century and plundered the area. The Portuguese were routed under Maharaja Pratapaditya but soon fell under Mughal rule. It eventually came under the British. North and South 24 became separate districts in 1983. Today, North 24 is the most populated district in West Bengal and one of the most populated districts in India.

The Mahishya are also known as the Sadgop people. They are believed to be descendants of Krishna. They work mainly in agriculture. They are Hindu and have family and village deities. Only around 0.35% are Christian.

TOTAL POPULATION: 4,260,000
The Namassej are outcasts from a mythical clan, they belong to one of the lowest castes in India. They are economically poor and many live as refugees. The Namassej are mainly part of a monist sect of Hinduism. Only around 0.43% are Christian.
