The headquarters of this district is Tamluk. 'Tamluk' from Sanskrit means "full of copper." This is said to have ancient kingdom meanings when the kingdom flourished. Archeological remains go as far back as the 3rd century B.C. It contains an ancient port city connecting the Bay of Bengal to the district by several major rivers. These rivers helped the district flourish in agriculture.
